The Grand National is one of the highlights of jump racing and is among the biggest spectacles of British racing in front of a worldwide audience.
But one thing that often catches many punters’ eyes at the Grand National is the odd grey among the field of 40 runners.
GETTY
Despite their popularity the grey horse is quite uncommon in this race, but they attract a huge amount of attention, especially since Neptune Collonges’ win ten years ago.
Only three greys have ever won the Grand National since its first running in 1839.
List of Grand National grey horse winners
The Lamb (1868, 1871)
Nicolaus Silver (1961)
Neptune Collonges (2012)
That is largely due to the small amount of grey horses aiming for the race and the few that do are reduced down to just one or two.
2022 Grand National grey horses and odds
- Snow Leopardess (10/1)
- Commodore (33/1)
- Coko Beach (100/1)
Snow Leopardess is one of the leading fancies for the Grand National this year and could make history if she wins.
She could become the first mare to win since 1951, only the fourth grey to ever win and the first mother to finish first past the post.
The Charlie Longsdon-trained horse, at the age of 10 is lightly raced in comparison to many.
That is largely due to her injury that kept her out for over two years and while she recovered from that she gave birth to Red Panda.
She certainly ticks all the boxes to make history at this year’s Grand National and holds leading claims.
Aidan Coleman boards the popular horse who was in contention to go into the day as favourite.
She even touched 7/1 in the market through the week leading up to Saturday but should go off as one of the main contenders, especially while her story spreads and attracts more support from punters.
Commodore
Phoenix Way was withdrawn on Friday and made way for Commodore to become the third grey in the running for the Grand National this year, alongside the longshot and big odds outsider Coko Beach.
Commodore is trained by the amazing trainer Venetia Williams, but her horses haven’t been running too well at Aintree so far.
If 33 is your lucky number though and of course love a grey horse punt then this is the perfect horse who made his way back into the field of 40 and is now 33/1.
Coko Beach’s odds have drifted in the market considerably over the course of Friday as the final 40 get a lot of market interest, but clearly the Gordon Elliott-trained horse isn’t the preferred to most.
However, with word spreading over the course of the day of the only three greys, the 7-year-old could see his odds shorten back to around 50’s as he was before the final change in the runners.
